Blocked Drain Advice

Blocked Drain/Toilet Emergency Guidelines

1. Identify the Blockage:
If you discover that you have a blocked drain or toilet, the first step is to identify where the blockage is located.

2. Contact Our Blocked Drain Line:
Call our Blocked Drain Line at 01983 655045 to report the issue. Our experienced Drainage Engineers will be dispatched to your property promptly.

3. Clear the Blockage:
Our engineers will use a variety of methods to clear the blockage, such as Rodding, Plunging, High Pressure Water Jetting, or a Rigid Machine, depending on the severity of the blockage.

4. Consider a CCTV Survey:
After clearing the blockage, we recommend conducting a CCTV Survey to inspect the condition of your drains. This will help identify the cause of the blockage and provide us with information to prevent future blockages. We can then advise you on the best course of action for repairs.

5. Shared Drain Line?
If the blockage is on a Shared Drain Line, the responsibility lies with your Local Water Authority (LWA). For Isle of Wight residents, this is Southern Water. They are responsible for clearing the blockage and carrying out any necessary repairs.

6. Know Your Responsibilities:
Since October 1, 2011, regulations have transferred responsibility for many shared drain lines from property owners to water companies. Here's what changed:

  •    Private Sewers: Sewers that serve more than one property and connect to public sewers are now the responsibility of water companies.

  •    Lateral Drains: Drains serving one property that extend beyond its boundary are also the responsibility of water companies.

   Who is responsible now?

  •    Property Owners: Responsible for household waste drains up to the property boundary.

  •    Water Companies (e.g., Southern Water): Responsible for maintaining private sewers outside the property boundary.

For assistance, call our Blocked Drain Line at 01983 655045 and we'll quickly resolve the issue with expert care and service.
